  《魏晋玄学论稿》充分展现了汤用彤先生在魏晋玄学治学领域的成果。魏晋玄学的主要方面,即玄学各派的演变、自然名教之争、言意之辩、玄学与佛教的关系、有无本末之争等问题之讨论,皆由魏晋玄学中诸文所揭橥,是中国哲学史上颇具原发性的学术创获。具体约略如下:1.自汤用彤先生始,学界统称魏晋思想为魏晋玄学,而玄学在他看来即是“本体之学,为本末有无之辨”。汤用彤先生认为思想蜕变求之于两件事:一是名学,二是易学。名学就是鉴识人物的名理之学,内容偏于人事,它作为“准玄学”为正始玄学准备了思想氛围;易学则关涉天道,如果能弄清汉魏之间易学的变迁,则可以了解汉代宇宙学说是如何演进为魏晋玄学的本体论的这个过程。2.汤用彤先生对魏晋玄学发展之迹钩沉发微,不惟强调其一以贯之的特殊精神或哲人们试图解决的时代课题,更注意凸显各期思想间因革损益的渐进关系及其思想特质。其中以东晋佛学为玄学之同调,尤透露出迥出众流的新消息。而其对玄学发展之分期,则允为定论,至今突破这一体系框架者仍不多见。汤用彤先生将魏晋玄学的发展之迹分为了正始时期、元康时期、永嘉时期和东晋时期。3.汤用彤先生以比较之法,通过分析向郭之学与王弼之学的同异而见出其哲学特质。4.汤用彤先生认为魏晋玄学的中心问题是“理想的圣人之人格究竟应该怎样?” 由此而引发出的“自然”与“名教”之辨。5.汤用彤先生对玄学兴盛之起因、发展、流别等,均有“孤明先发”之研讨、分疏和探析。在探讨玄学兴起之因时,他曾着力分析汉魏之际易学的变迁,以证解易中自由精神对有无、本末之辨的催发作用,此为其探本溯源的着眼点之一。

作者简介

  汤用彤(1893年8月4日—1964年5月2日),字锡予,湖北黄梅人,但也有资料显示他出生地为甘肃渭源县。他是著名的哲学家、佛学家、教育家和国学大师,在中国佛教史、魏晋玄学以及印度哲学等领域有着深入的研究。汤用彤的教育背景丰富,1917年毕业于清华学堂,并于1918年到美国留学,先后就读于汉姆林大学和哈佛大学,1922年获得哈佛大学的哲学硕士学位。他曾在东南大学、南开大学、北京大学和西南联合大学等高校任职,包括教授、系主任和文科研究所所长等职。他的学术贡献不仅限于教学和研究,还涉及行政管理。1949年1月至1951年10月,汤用彤担任北京大学校务委员会主席,主持学校的日常管理工作。此外,他还当选为中科院哲学社会科学部学部委员,成为全国政协一届委员、三届委员、全国人大一、二、三届代表的身份活跃在国内外的学术界。汤用彤的主要著作包括《汉魏两晋南北朝佛教史》、《印度哲学史略》、《魏晋玄学论稿》、《隋唐佛教史稿》和《理学、玄学、佛学》等。
