Why this structure? The architect presents the client with a very serious building concept, and then the client is supposed to believe it without question. When I work abroad, I really have to come up with a convincing theory. Everybody will ask me “why?” even the general public. In that sense I think architects in Japan are spoiled they don’t have to convince people. That is the reason why there’s such a freedom of shape. It provides Japanese contemporary architecture with a certain identity.
RHSo it’s easier for an architect in Japan?
SBFor me there’s no difference, since I studied architecture in the United States. There are so many opportunities in Japan especially for young architects. Since I have been traveling all over the world, I can say, we have a very unique situation here. In the United States there are practically no competitions for young talents and that’s why I think Tokyo is one of the best places to start a practice. The Japanese client is flexible and really interested in something modern and innovative although he doesn’t quiz the architect enough. I was very lucky to start my own practice in Tokyo.
RHDid today’s computer technology improve architecture?
SBI use computers as a tool but not for designing. Architecture is one of the very few fields where the advance of computers doesn’t make things better except structural design. Hundreds of years ago, without computers, we were building better architecture. The more time we spend in designing and building, the better architecture becomes. That’s why the advance of computers doesn’t necessarily mean it makes architecture better.
RHIs this openness towards modern styles that you mentioned, a reflection of Japan’s modern lifestyle as a whole?
SBTo be honest, we are having very critical problems. First of all, the education system is terrible. The universities are the worst in the world. Students don’t have to study. They even don’t come to school. They cannot speak English. We are generally not able to work in other countries. We have no strong leaders in politics. No one wants to be a politician. I don’t see any future for Japan.
